recipe: hot dog octopus

ok.
so honestly i almost feel a little silly putting this out there...
i'm sure most mama's have seen this somewhere at some point in time...
i mean, i myself have seen it so often i couldn't even tell you when or where i saw it first...

maybe my old betty crocker cookbook from when i was a kid?
who knows..
i made it for mason once before...
and obviously so long ago, that he didn't even remember me doing it before.
how's that for changing it up.. repeating every oh 4 years.
ha.

anyways..
for those of you who HAVEN'T seen this before..
it's not rocket science, promise.

hot dog + spaghetti noodles = hot dog octopus

cut your hot dog in half.
i break my spaghetti noodles in half as well,
although leaving them long may be more impressive to the littles.

then just insert the noodles (uncooked obviously) into the cut side of the hot dog.
i contemplated sticking more than 8 in for shock value..
but as i have a smarty pants for a son,
i was sure if i called it an octopus & it had more than 8 tentacles he'd call me on it.

put the whole thing down into bowling water.
(i put our regular hot dogs in a few seconds after this shot, no tentacles were harmed)

& you have your hot dog octopus. or hot-dog-topus maybe?!

and of course every hot dog octopus needs a bed of macaroni & cheese shells to lay on right?

the dude though they were funny.
he laughed & pretended like the tentacles were sticking to his face as he ate it
(he's watched too much of andrew zimmern on bizarre foods i suppose)
& then politely informed me the long body made it look more like a squid than an octopus.

smarty pants.

  1. LOL. awesome, my mom use to make us hotdog octopuses when we were kids. But she just cut the bottom of the hotdog, then when you boil them the ends curl up. :)
